As emerging physicians, our Rural Scholars have the opportunity to apply for a Masters in Public Health (MPH) degree. This dual degree is a collaborative partnership between the Rural Scholars Program and the School of Public Health (SPH). It is designed to benefit students by strengthening their knowledge in public health within the areas of health policy, health management, professionalism, and leadership.

This interdisciplinary degree will provide students with the knowledge and skills that emphasize the core functions of public health. This includes the assessment of health risks and current levels of disease, the development of public health policies, the assurance of health improvement through health promotion and disease prevention, and the management of health systems. We believe these concepts are vital to the development of a rural physician in the 21st century.

The MPH Professional Option degree will include the following components:

  • 8 School of Public Health Courses
  • Public Health Practice Experience
  • MPH Professional Option Capstone
  • Certified in Public Health Exam (CPH)

Students will also be assigned a mentor who will be available over the course of their degree. The mentor will possess both a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and a Masters of Public Health. This experience will guide students in developing an individual relationship that will enhance their professional networks.

This is a competitive scholarship opportunity * that will include an award of tuition, fees and a stipend for the MPH portion of the degree. This opportunity will be introduced to Rural Scholars during the spring semester of their first year, with the application process to follow.
