From commuters driving to work or class to the campus fleet, transportation is a major part of UNTHSC's operations and effect on the local community. We aim to:
- Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from commuter cars and the campus fleet
- Encourage eco-friendly transportation
Carpool & Rideshare
Currently Dallas/Fort Worth does not meet federal air quality standards. This means that our air can have adverse effects on human health and that our region may come under stricter regulations if we do not comply with standards soon (click here to learn more). In addition, harmful emissions from vehicles are a major contributor to climate change. As an integral part of the Fort Worth community, UNTHSC is identifying ways to encourage our campus population to carpool, ride share, and use mass transportation which would result in a reduction of fossil fuel consumption and traffic congestion, improved air quality, and personal cost savings.
TryParkingIt.com is a program by the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) that provides a matching service for carpooling and vanpooling. It also measures the benefits of trip reduction strategies such as carpooling against single occupant vehicle transportation. Click below to get started. Register under UNT Health Science Center to find your matches and start enjoying the benefits of carpooling/vanpooling. It's a quick and easy process!
UNTHSC offers discounted bus and train fares to its employees and students. The university purchases passes directly from the bus companies and are valid from January 1 through December 31 each year. Prices for 2013 are $360 for a local pass (The T buses only), $480 for a local + Zone1 pass (The T buses and TRE Zone1) or $960 for a regional pass (includes The T, TRE Zones1&2, and DART). In order to purchase a pass, you must pre-order and pay in advance. Student Development collects payments between November 1 through early December, and passes are available for pickup by the end of December. Only cash and checks are accepted, and you must present a UNTHSC ID. If you wish to purchase a pass in the middle of the year, contact Student Development to be put on a list. UNTHSC Discounted Parking Policy The UNTHSC‘s Police Department offers a 20% discount
on parking permits to drivers of low emission vehicles (LEVs) and fuel
efficient vehicles (FEVs). LEVs and FEVs are defined as vehicles that
are either classified as Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) by the California
Air Resources Board or have a minimum green score of 40 on the American
Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE) annual vehicle-rating
guide. To see if your car qualifies, click here or visit the Police Department on campus.
In order to receive the discount, stop by the UNTHSC Police Department on campus. You will need to provide a copy of your vehicle’s registration, and you must pay for the entire year in full (based on the fiscal year from September 1 through August 31). For more information, contact the Police Department or the Office of Sustainability.
Get some exercise, avoid fighting for a parking space, and be green by riding a bicycle to campus! There are bicycle racks located throughout campus. For information on routes throughout Fort Worth, visit the City of Fort Worth’s website or Bike DFW.
Fort Worth is currently in the process of providing a bike share program in our community, and UNTHSC is considering sponsoring a location. The program is proposed to be launched by spring of 2013. Check back soon for more information!
