  W. Paul Bowman, MD

  Professor and Chairman of Pediatrics


  Dr. Bowman is a native of Winnipeg, Canada. He graduated from the University of Manitoba as class valedictorian before becoming a fellow in pediatric hematology/oncology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1982, he came to what is now known as Cook Children’s Medical Center as co-director of the Hematology/Oncology Department and made Fort Worth his home. He won the Distinguished Physician Award in 2003 and was presented with the prestigious Gold Headed Cane from the Cook Children’s Physician Network. He was the first sub-specialty physician to receive the award, voted for by his peers. Dr. Bowman has served as Chair of Pediatrics at UNTHSC and Medical Director of Academic Pediatrics at Cook Children’s since 2008. His clinical and research interests include childhood cancer, leukemia, and survivorship. He is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology/oncology.


Fling, MD

  John Fling, MD

  Professor - Allergy/Pediatrics

  Dr. Fling served for twenty years in the US Air Force. His last assignment on active military   duty was director of hospital services at Carswell Air Force Base. Dr. Fling is board certified in pediatrics and allergy/immunology. His practice is limited to the care of adults and children in allergy/immunology. Dr. Fling´s main area of interest is the care and management of individuals suffering from asthma. Dr. Fling is also is involved in clinical trials and investigational studies, and he has several 'in progress' trials.


Podgore, DO  John Podgore, DO

  Professor - Pediatrics

  Dr. Podgore is board certified in pediatrics, has a sub-board in pediatric infectious diseases, and a certificate in clinical tropical medicine and traveler´s health. Dr. Podgore is retired from the US Army with medical assignments in Vietnam, Hawaii, Washington State, and Colorado, as well as research assignments in Cairo, Egypt. In February 2004, Dr. Podgore lectured and conducted seminars in Baghdad, Iraq to re-establish the Iraq Medical Society and subsequently presented seminars in Kurdistan and Basra, Iraq. He spent a year in Malawi, Africa as a fellow in the CDC Global AIDS Project, and currently serves as a mentor for the UNTHSC global medicine program in Malawi.


Goodrich, DO  Toyya Goodrich, DO

  Assistant Professor - Pediatrics


  Dr. Goodrich is a Texas native. She grew up in the small town of Nederland, Texas, and serves as assistant professor in the department of pediatrics at the UNTHSC. Prior to joining the health science center, Dr. Goodrich served as a pediatric resident at the University of Arkansas for the Medical Sciences/Arkansas Children´s Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. While there, she supervised the patient care of infants, children and teenagers in every medical specialty, working nights and weekends on-call in the neonatal and pediatric ICUs, supervising and teaching interns and medical students, and participating in her own continuity care clinic. In addition, she participated in Angel Flight Transport for the pediatric ICU, transporting and managing critically ill children.


Habiba, MD  Nusrath Habiba, MD

  Assistant Professor - Pediatrics

  Dr. Habiba graduated from medical school in India. After completing her compulsory rotatory internship, she started her own family practice in Chennai, India in 1982...concentrating mainly on women and children. She remained in practice until 1999 when she immigrated to the USA. After moving, she worked in the nephrology division of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Her research focus centered on skin micro dialysis, tissue renin angiotensin system in normal and diabetics, and kidney involvement in diabetes. Dr. Habiba did her residency in pediatrics at Texas Tech University Health Science Center at Amarillo from 2005 until 2008. She was the chief resident for one year during her third year residency. She joined as full-time faculty in the Department of Pediatrics at UNTHSC in 2008. She is board certified in pediatrics.


Lar, MD

David Lar, MD

  Assistant Professor- Pediatrics

Dr. Lar is a board-certified pediatrician and an assistant professor of Pediatrics at UNTHSC.  He was born and raised in New York. He graduated from NYU School of Medicine and completed his Pediatric residency training at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY. Dr. Lar’s clinical interests include: asthma, obesity, and community medicine.He joined the Department of   Pediatrics at UNTHSC in 2012.

Matches, DO

Sarah Matches, DO

  Assistant Professor - Pediatrics


  Dr. Matches was born and raised in Columbia, Missouri. She is an assistant professor of pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics at UNTHSC. Dr. Matches has been a member of the faculty at the health science center since completing her training in 1994. She has chosen to work part-time so that she may spend a significant amount of time with her family, which includes two boys. Her husband, Dr. Alvin Mathe, is also with the health science center in the geriatrics division of the department of internal medicine.


Mattingly, PA

Laura Mattingly, MHS, PA-C

  Instructor - Physician Assistant Program

  PA Mattingly developed an interest in science at an early age and pursued a career in the medical field by attending the biomedical sciences program and the PA program at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. In 2003, she moved to the D/FW area where she worked in family practice clinics and long-term care facilities until joining the

PA Studies faculty and the Pediatrics Department at UNTHSC in 2009.


Hafeez, MD

Raheela Hafeez, MD

  Assistant Professor - Pediatrics

  Raheela Hafeez, MD is Assistant Professor in the department of Pediatrics at UNTHSC. She is a board certified pediatrician. Dr. Hafeez graduated from DUHS (Dow University of Health Sciences) in Karachi, Pakistan. She was trained in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and Obstetrics & Gynecology. She was in private practice working as a pediatrician, and practicing women’s health before she moved to the USA in 1992. In the USA, Dr. Hafeez completed her pediatric residency training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. She moved with her family to Texas in 1998, first to El Paso and then to Fort Worth in 2001, which she claims as her home town. Dr. Hafeez was in private practice and worked part-time before joining the University of North Texas at Fort Worth in 2008. She chose to practice part-time in order to balance her professional and family life. Her husband is a nephrologist in private practice in Fort Worth. She has two beautiful daughters.

Robinson, MD

Christina E. Castleberry Robinson, MD

  Assistant Professor - Pediatrics

She is a native of Fort Worth. She hails from the Stop Six Community and was a member of the high stepping Dunbar Wildcat Marching Band. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at Austin College in Sherman, TX where her awareness of racial disparities in healthcare was heightened. She completed her medical education at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX and Pediatric Residency at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. She has returned home to Fort Worth to fulfill her passions for medicine and service. She is the mother of one son and wife of a loving husband who serves as Youth Pastor for their church.
