Professor and Chairman
I am very pleased to welcome you to the Department of Orthopaedics website. In 2005, we were invited to become the orthopaedic department at the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) and now we are hosts to almost the entire medical school class of 240 students for a two week musculoskeletal rotation. Currently, we have 13 full-time faculty members (10 orthopaedic and three podiatric) and all hold appropriate faculty appointments at UNTHSC.
The affiliation with UNT has strengthened our research program immeasurably. Funding from the State of Texas has made it possible to hire one full-time researcher, Dr. Victor Kosmopoulos, and several part-time staff into our department. It also enables us to provide start up funds for departmental research projects and reimburse our faculty for time spent in the laboratory and teaching. As you will see on the website, our residents and faculty have already embarked on several projects made possible by resources provided by the Health Science Center. In addition, the added emphasis on scholarly activity has made it possible to recruit excellent and highly qualified clinical faculty.
The business of our department is also rapidly expanding. In addition to providing care for the indigent and uninsured patients of Tarrant County through a new five-year contract with the Tarrant County Hospital District, most of our faculty members also have private practices within UNT Health, the faculty health plan. Both the JPS practice and the private practice components of our department enrich our residents’ academic experience and provide essential healthcare services to our patients. In the near future we will be looking to consolidate our private practices, along with other related medical specialties and support services, into a musculoskeletal and sports medicine center of excellence.
Through this website, we hope to keep you abreast of all that is happening in our dynamic department. As our department grows and our research productivity increases, we will expand these pages accordingly. In the meantime, I will conclude by saying that I am extremely proud of our entire team of residents, faculty and support staff. We have changed considerably in recent years but our core mission remains the same: “Excellence in orthopaedic education through the delivery of superb musculoskeletal care.”
