Education and the MSI

aa2 res ed

The Mental Sciences Initiatives supports the teaching mission of the university in the behavioral sciences for medical students in TCOM, graduate students in Clinical Health Psychology from UNT, and post-graduate residents at JPS Health Network. MSI faculty affiliates teach biostatistics for clinical researchers, introduction to clinical research methods, and applied health psychology topics. Education initiatives include topics in pain and depression, anatomical foundations of manual medicine, evidence-based musculoskeletal care, and therapeutic touch.

Medical Students

Through a grant from the NIH National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the MSI partners with the Osteopathic Research Center to provide research education in the medical school. The curriculum uses a tiered competency modelto teach Tier I competencies to second year students. This focuses on developing students' skills in being proficient professional consumers of biomedical research literature and EBM information. Advanced research education is also available through this grant and an award from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation for a focus on manual medicine and other CAM modalities.

Residents

Psychiatry residents in the JPS Health Network Department of Psychiatry receive research training as part of their didactic program.

Practitioners

The MSI team cooperates with faculty in basic sciences, behavioral sciences, and other health professions to teach and mentor students from a variety of programs including the McNair Scholars Program, the STAR Fellowship, and practicum and elective rotations.
