Palliative Medicine

The objective of the Fellowship in Palliative Medicine is to provide the residency-trained physician with expert knowledge and progressive independence in the practice of hospice and palliative medicine. The fellow will be given the opportunity to put into practice osteopathic principles of health care. Upon completion of the program, the fellow will demonstrate useful interpersonal and collaboration skills, professionalism, and the clinical skills necessary to manage the majority of challenges encountered in a palliative setting. The fellowship provides training across a broad spectrum of Palliative Medicine. We have a hospital based Palliative Medicine service that includes a consult service and a 16-bed Palliative Care Unit. The fellow will also have experience with hospice home based and inpatient teams. The graduate will also serve as an advocate for patients and families facing a life-limiting or life-threatening illness.

This foundation is a prerequisite to mastering palliative care skills at the sub-specialist level. Once the fellow successfully completes the program, the graduate will have the opportunity to pursue a Certificate of Added Qualification in Palliative Medicine from the American Osteopathic Association.
