Research Interest:-My research is focused on social determinants of health disparities, with a focus on vulnerable populations. My team employs a community-based participatory approach to build community capacity to address these disparities, including HIV, infant mortality, breast cancer, and HPV vaccination. Funding for our work has come from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute, HRSA, the U.S. Department of Justice, Texas Health and Human Services Commission, NIH, CDC, and local foundations.

Research Interest:-My area of expertise is in using environmental and molecular data to understand causal pathways contributing to the etiology of cancer. The goal of this research is to determine how cancer susceptibility genes interact with environmental exposures to affect cancer occurrence and outcomes. My work have been supported by the NIH and the UNTHSC Intramural Grant Program, and published in journals such as Cancer Causes Control, Neuroepidemiology, Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and the Annals of Epidemiology, among others. As a further extension of this work, I am leading the research arm of a novel community collaborative aimed at providing a comprehensive diversion strategy to high risk, hard to reach, street sex workers. Findings have been presented at state, national, and international conferences.

Research Interest:-My research analytically examines the patterns of distribution, risk factors and treatment success of major mental disorders (psychiatric epidemiology) in adolescents and women across the life course. Currently I am examining aspects of evidence-based, integrative treatment for adolescents seeking care for co-occurring disorders. Additionally, I am interested in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) or therapies used to treat substance use/abuse and psychiatric illnesses, where Western medicine has not been successful alone. My recent work is with substance abuse treatment centers in Dallas, evaluating the effectiveness of multiple CAM therapies (e.g., acupuncture, spirituality, music, and art therapy) and its association with treatment outcomes in women.

Research Interest:-I have extensive research experience and successful publication record. I have served as a Co-I on several NIH funded grants and have gained considerable grant (NIH) writing experience (R15, R21 and R01). My educational background is in human development, family, child, adolescent, and public health/epidemiological research design and analysis. My research skills include general population survey design and analysis, questionnaire development, sampling, psychometrics, and statistical analysis; experience in analyzing large data sets concerning general population samples. My area of research expertise include: Alcohol epidemiology, alcohol related problems and their impact on family violence; child/Adolescent risk behaviors, alcohol/ drug use, sexual risk taking? etiology, consequences particularly in minority populations (e.g., Hispanic and native populations). I have published my research in a wide variety of peer-reviewed journals.
