Molecular Biology and Immunology
Welcome to the website for the Department of Molecular Biology and Immunology at UNTHSC. The department was created in the late 20th century by the joining of two distinct and different departments, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Microbiology & Immunology. Because of this melding together of two departments, we have been able to capture the experience of faculty in a wide variety of research areas to build an excellent Department of Molecular Biology and Immunology.
We have three major degree programs where you can earn a Master’s or a Ph.D. degree. These programs are Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Microbiology & Immunology and Cancer Biology. We have faculty with widely varying research interests in the following areas: Time-Resolved Fluorescence Studies, Immunology, Infectious Diseases, Innate Immunity, Adaptive Immunity, Single Molecule Spectroscopy, Cancer Immunology, Molecular Biology of Natural Killer Cells, Ultrafast Spectroscopy, Nanophotonics, Macromolecular Interactions, Biomedical Diagnostics, Protein-protein Interactions, Interactions of Stress and Immunity, Detoxification of Peroxidation Products, Precise Drug Delivery, Anti-oxidation Responses, Anaerobic Metabolism of Parasitic Helminths, Drug Discovery and Metabolism, Proteomics, Oxidative Metabolism of Proteins, Cancer Biochemistry and Treatment. Because we have such a diverse faculty with such varying interests we are able to offer studies in just about anything that can be thought of in the field of Molecular Biology and Immunology.
As you might guess, we have research grants from a variety of institutes at the NIH, NSF, American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the R. A. Welch Foundation of Texas. We also have funds from many private foundations and industrial firms as well as the State of Texas. Many of our graduate students receive monetary support from some of these funds.
